Every time a break-up song plays on the radio, I think of you. I don’t know why. We weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend. We weren’t even boy and girl. Just two girls who were the complete best of friends. And while we weren’t sexually attracted to each other (though sometimes I still question this), we did deeply love each other. I guess it was foolish of me to honestly believe we would be together forever.
I know people change. I know friendships drift apart and relationships fade. They say friendships ending are a natural thing, but you not in my life seems the polar opposite of natural. It’s not right that we’re not together.
Our friendship lasted only three years, but I’ve never grown closer to anyone than I did with you. We told each other our private secrets, our deepest fears, our hopes and dreams. We defied all we could so that we could be together, gave each other nicknames, and helped each other when life seemed miserable. But above all, we talked about our future together. The college we would both go to, the job we would both have, the way we needed each other for life ahead. We said “I love you” often, and we always meant it.
I have spent countless hours trying to figure out the point where it all went wrong. What did you do? What did I say? Maybe you know, but I can’t think of a reason why we dropped the strongest bond I have ever experienced.
I will let go of my pride, step away from my dignity. I will be big enough to say that I miss you. I am truly sorry for all that I have done to you. You are the best person I know. You are kind, beautiful, and your heart is enormous.
This is a year late, I know. But I miss being your best friend, and I miss those best times. I said I would never forget you and whether I like it or not, I know I’m going to have to keep that promise. I miss you.
